Women lose hair too. Let’s explore why.

Genetics

Women can inherit the hair loss gene just as men do. Rather than a receding hairline and baldness, female pattern hair loss often results in thinning all over.

Hormonal

Periods of fluctuating hormones can impact your hair. This includes pregnancy and menopause. It’s common to lose hair after childbirth.

Give it time and your hair usually grows back. Menopause hair loss can be more complicated but with the right treatment, you can still restore your locks.

Medical condition

Women may be prone to certain medical conditions that can lead to hair loss. These include PCOS, hypothyroidism, and anaemia (caused by an iron or B vitamin deficiency).

Medications

Hair loss may be a side effect of a medical treatment or medication including chemotherapy for cancer, retinoids, antidepressants, and NSAIDs.

Stress

If your body has experienced a sudden shock or severe stress, it can shut down “unnecessary” processes, including hair growth. This causes a temporary hair loss called telogen effluvium.

We’re obsessed with making hair loss a thing of the past.

Did you know?

Almost half of all women have hair loss by the age of 50. This often happens because the body experiences a sharp drop in oestrogen levels during menopause.

Women lose between 50 and 100 hairs every single day. It is a natural part of the hair growth cycle, when new hair grows and replaces old hair.

With 650+ different ingredient combinations, The Hairy Pill® is Australia’s only clinically-backed hair loss treatment that offers true personalisation for women.

The idea that hair loss does not affect women is a big old myth. Almost half of all women experience some hair loss by the time they hit 50.

Everything you didn’t know about hair loss.

In case you were wondering…

Why am I losing so much hair as a female?

The most common reason your hair might be thinning is hereditary hair loss, also called female pattern hair loss. You’re not alone and it’s not uncommon: Almost half of all Australian women will experience some hair loss in their lives.

Other reasons for female hair loss include overstyling, autoimmune conditions, hormonal changes (such as menopause or pregnancy), infection, medical treatments or medication, or poor nutrition.

Does it matter how my hair loss is presenting?
Generally no. Female hair loss can present in many different ways and can be a little more complex than male hair loss.

Your hair may be thinning out all over (diffuse thinning) or you may notice more of your scalp in the parting. Your hair may be shedding much more than before or feel dry, damaged and brittle. Perhaps you’re losing it from the front and sides or experiencing a bald patch.

However your hair loss looks, it can be treated with The Hairy Pill®. If you feel your hair loss is presenting differently from what’s listed above and you’d like to discuss this further, please reach out.

Could my hair loss only be short-term?

Women experience some significant hormonal changes in their life that can lead to short-term hair loss. Sometimes this will reverse on its own and won’t require treatment.

For instance, if you’ve just had a baby and noticed hair loss during or after the pregnancy, give your body six months to see if your hair will recover. In some cases of pregnancy, your hair will recover in time and won’t require treatment.

In a smaller number of cases, this will kickstart ongoing and progressive hair loss. If you have finished breastfeeding, you may be able to begin The Hairy Pill® treatment.

Menopause can also cause hair loss. You may want to give your body some time to recover before moving to treatment.

If you’ve had hair loss before either pregnancy or menopause (or any significant hormonal changes) and this has exacerbated the issue, it’s much more likely you’re part of the nearly 50% of Australian women that will have progressive and ongoing hair loss and you would be a great candidate for treatment.

Can I take The Hairy Pill if I’m trying to conceive, pregnant or breastfeeding?

No, sorry! Many medical grade treatments are not safe to take when trying to conceive, pregnant or breastfeeding and The Hairy Pill® is no different.

Once you’ve finished breastfeeding, we’d love to welcome you on board. If you have any further questions about this topic, you’re welcome to reach out.

Will I get hair growth anywhere else on my body?

Stimulation of growth elsewhere (other than concentrated on the head) may be a rare side effect of the treatment and is dose-related. It tends to occur at much higher doses (which aren’t necessary for most patients).

This means the vast majority of people don’t experience additional hair growth elsewhere. In the rare case it happens, our medical practitioners can change the dose to remove any unwanted growth.

It can also subside by itself over time if you’re intent on continuing at the same dose. In many cases where growth happens elsewhere other than the head, it will present as extra growth of your eyelashes, eyebrows and nails.

As the medical practitioners use low doses to begin treatment, and the treatment is compounded each time by the pharmacist, we have a high degree of control over outcomes over the long term.

Can I cancel my subscription once my hair grows back?

Yes, there are no lock-in contracts and you are free to cancel your subscription any time. Just be aware that stopping treatment may reverse the progress you have made with your hair growth.

If you are among the 1 in 2 women who have progressive hair loss over time, your hair loss will begin again once you stop taking the treatment and your hair will eventually return to its original condition before you started treatment.

If you used The Hairy Pill® to expedite hair growth for a temporary hair loss condition (such as pregnancy hair loss), you can stop treatment without losing your new growth.
